now a Warrior for Arkansas

Teresa Dannaway

My goal is to make Arkansas a better place to live for everyone! We need to improve our public education system, have more access to mental health, and improve equality and inclusion for those with disabilities.

Teresa was born and raised in Arkansas. She graduated from the University of Arkansas at Little Rock where she met her husband, Steve. She worked full-time in the Records and Registration Office at UALR until she became pregnant with their first child, Tyler.

Tyler was born on February 4, 2009, and she became a stay-at-home mom. When Tyler was two and a half years old, he was diagnosed with autism. From that point on, Teresa became his advocate and grew into helping local autism families and creating a local autism support group called Autism Connections. She also worked part-time as a Family Care Navigator at the Dennis Developmental Center at Arkansas Children's Hospital, where she was able to help newly diagnosed families get the resources they needed.

In 2018, tragedy hit her family when their son, Tyler, suddenly passed away from flu complications. To help keep Tyler's legacy alive (he loved helping others), Steve and Teresa established a non-profit organization called the Tyler Dannaway Foundation where she is the Executive Director.

In May 2023, Teresa graduated from the Arkansas Alliance for Disability Advocacy’s Partners in Policymaking Program. This program has helped her become a better advocate for the disability community and made her more interested in politics. She is also on the Arkansas Alliance for Disability Advocacy's 2023-2024 Advocacy Advisory Council.

Teresa Dannaway is very dedicated and passionate.

What The Community Says

The Issues Facing Us

img
Reform the LEARNS Act

I am very passionate about education and think the LEARNS Act needs to be improved. If it continues as is, it will bankrupt our public schools. We need to use funding on the public schools (including special education) to fix the issues instead of using that funding for private school vouchers. Education needs to be accessible to everyone and I will work hard to improve this act.

Expanding Mental Health Care

Mental health is an important part of our well being. This was evident during Covid 19 especially with the students who had to attend school from home. Between 2016 and 2020, Arkansas had the third highest increase in childhood depression and anxiety. Schools should have access to a professional mental health counselor for students. I will work hard to get mental health services available for everyone.

Enhance Disabilities Rights for All

There are several concerns in the disability community but, one for certain, is employment. Some struggle to find jobs because there is no placement support available and others have jobs that can legally pay less than minimum wage. I will work tirelessly to ensure accessible jobs for everyone so they can contribute and be productive members of society.
